Events and Opportunities

Write Out 2023 is scheduled for October 8-22, 2023. Each year, local and national events are organized across the country to celebrate Write Out; here are a few from the past year in case you missed it.

The Week-at-a-Glance will give you a sense of the flow of the overall event.

Science Writing: Creating and Sharing Good, True and Inclusive Stories of Science

Schoodic Institute, based at Acadia National Park, is a nonprofit partner of the National Park Service whose mission is to inspire science, learning, and community for a changing world. Science writer Catherine Schmitt to learn how she approaches her writing and the ways that Schoodic Institute and National Park Service are supporting inclusive science writing. We also hear from Park Ranger Amber Kirkendall from Homestead National Historical Park about her experience with historical writing, leading outdoor writing programs, and Write Out.

I Was A Kid: A Science Notebooks Project with Karen Romano Young

A science notebook is a tool to help you with your own work.  What are some needs notebooks help their keepers meet? What can a notebook help YOU (and your students) do? Join I Was A Kid author/illustrator Karen Romano Young along with teachers and National Park Service Rangers for this special Write Out event focused on making and using Notebooks in STEAM.

Given the National Park Service’s October focus on STEAM-Powered resources, Write Engineer invites students from grades K-12 and adults to experience place-based writing, focusing on their experiences in the spaces of St. Louis.

The Western Massachusetts Writing Project and the Springfield Armory National Historic Site partner up to offer an afternoon of STEAM-based and Journal-based exploration of the grounds of the Springfield Armory for local educators, as we explore Seed Bombs (with native plants); pollination gardens; and the role in urban tree canopies for heat reduction. All this, and the creation of Data Journals, too, as we celebrate Write Out 2022 (see flyer).

Featured Session: Landhealth Institute presentation and #WriteOut Wonder Walk

The LandHealth Institute, a nonprofit based in Philadelphia, will lead a featured session at the Philadelphia Writing Project’s Celebration of Writing and Literacy. LandHealth will give an overview of the environmental problems facing surrounding neighborhoods and then lead a Wonder Walk tour. The session will be led by Landhealth Founder and CEO Scott Quitel; Quitel has led hundreds of educational ecology and design-oriented tours/hikes for people of all ages in natural areas in and around Philadelphia.
