FAQ

How does Write Out work?

To “do” Write Out, simply go outside and write. You can also organize an opportunity for a group to go outside and write together. Activities can be organized any way you are comfortable in your context. The Write Out website and newsletters are meant to provide some guidance, but feel free to follow your own interests and intuition.

Note that Write Out begins and ends with newsletters delivered directly to your email inbox. While we will be sending updates and resources ahead of time, the newsletter that we send on the designated first day will be your indication that the event is underway. Newsletters will then arrive in your inbox every few days during Write Out to encourage you forward while featuring highlights from across the country.

Is there a prompt every day?

No, there isn’t a daily prompt. Instead, there are resources to support you in finding prompts that work for you and/or any groups—such as students, families, friends—with whom you might be writing outside.

Resources curated for each year’s event will be sent via the newsletters and will be posted to the website closer to the start of the event. Note that you can find past resources and content via the archives; see the "Past" menu item in the top navigation for more.

Where can we share?

There are different options for sharing online:
  • Post to social media with the hashtag #writeout (you can find others doing the same on X, Facebook and Instagram)
  • Join the Write Out group in the Write Now Teacher Studio and add a post
  • Join the Write Out Facebook group and share with that community
  • Share with a friend near you or gather as a group; some specific ideas for doing these things can be found here.
In addition to the ideas mentioned above, think about places in your community that might want to feature your groups writing locally including public libraries, mini-libraries, coffee shops, schools, public spaces like parks, recreation centers, etc. (And then please share a pictures using the #writeout hashtag so that we can celebrate nationwide! :)

Do you have an overview of how it goes and how much time is required?

Write Out can happen however it works best for you. You can Write Out each day or just once or twice over the course of two weeks...or anything in-between. Whatever is best for you!

Over the two weeks, we create a bit of a “flow” by having two weekly identical cycles that include touch-points—newsletters, online events, online gatherings—along the way.

Check out our "week-at-a-glance" graphic to give you an idea.
