Sit Spots Handouts shared by the Ohio Writing Project

“One EASY way I integrate writing into my science class is through observing, collecting data (through sketch notes or poetry), and doing “sit spots”. One beginning of the year activity I love doing because it’s super low stakes is taking my students on a “field study” trip. We talk about how scientists often observe and write their observations down in a notebook. We also talk about gathering “samples” and using the 5 senses to describe these samples. … Give them 5 minutes just to observe and write what they hear, see, feel… I asked questions like what does the sun look like? What colors do you see? Could you sketch something you notice? Lowstakes!”
